Trainspotting with the 40mm M-Rokkor and Sony A7r

Image
Here are some test shots with the Minolta 40mm f/2 M-Rokkor for the Minolta CLE. This is the multicoated version of the Leica 40mm Summicron-C. We used the very compact 40mm M-Rokkor walking around a local train museum with the Sony A7r via a Leica M lens adapter . The shots up to the handcart are all done at maximum aperture of f/2. Manual focus was very easy with using the viewfinder magnification of the A7r even in the mid-day sun. The mid-day sun also guaranteed high shutter speeds at ISO 100 and f/2. All the shots are handheld. The shots below are at f/5.6 up to f/11. We need to test this lens more but the sweet spot is definitely at f/5.6. The CSX 152 (GE AC4400CW diesel-electric locomotive) and the CSX 7305 (GE C40-8 [Dash 8]) was shot during the afternoon sun. Sony A7r with a Minolta 40mm f/2 M-Rokkor via Leica M Adapter The lens has been great on the Minolta CLE and NEX-7 and it performs well on the full-frame A7r. The lightweight and

Sony A7r with Konica Hexanon 57mm f1.2

Sony A7r with Konica Hexanon 57mm f/1.2 shot by NEX-7 with a Leica 60mm Macro-Elmarit-R Here are some of our test shots from the Sony A7r and the Konica Hexanon 57mm f/1.2 lens. The lens was mounted on the A7r using a Konica AR lens adapter . We wanted to test out the lens at f/1.2 the whole time and it was fitted with a 4X ND filter to battle the sun. The 1/8000 shutter speed and 50 ISO of the Sony A7r helped at times as well. The Konica 57mm played very well with the A7r per our standards. All the shots were handheld as we rarely use a tripod. The focusing, at such a shallow depth of field from the large f/1.2 aperture of the lens, was manageable on the A7r. The weight of the lens would make us think twice of walking around with it but the results are hard to argue with. The details shown at f/1.2 is remarkable even at the outer edges of the shots. 100% crop of the shot above shows great detail. Not a technically perfect shot. Red Pail Pops. 100% crop of the shot a

Sony A7 and A7r Hands On with DigitalRev

Sony A7r Weather Sealing Test with 28-70mm FE Kit Lens Kai Wong of DigitalRev Plays with the Sony A7 Cameras The new Sony A7 and A7r cameras are featured on Digital Rev with Kai Wong. The A7's 28-70mm FE Kit lens was used on the A7r and produced "stellar" shots. The A7 and A7r's focus systems were compared. The water resitance was also tested using the A7r and the 28-70mm kit lens. A Leica 50mm f/0.95 Noctilux-M ASPH was used to show how adaptable the E-mount is. The focus peaking display was nicely featured. In conclusion, Kai was impressed with both cameras, "Sony has created a product of desire." Sony A7 and A7r Hands On at PhotoPlus Expo

Image
Sony A7r with a Voigtlander 12mm Lens and Viewfinder It was a very crowded Sony booth at PhotoPlus. The great thing was the Sony representatives were very accommodating to anyone who wanted to play with the new Sony A7 and A7r. We had our bag of lenses and was able to mount them all on the A7 and A7r - check out the 12mm viewfinder on the A7r above. The lenses include the following: Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 Leica Thread Mount on a helicoid adapter. Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron LTM. Minolta 24mm f/2.8 Rokkor MD. Contax G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon. Contax Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 Planar with the Metabones Speedbooster and the standard C/Y adapter. Zeiss 12mm f/2.8 Touit Distagon. The cameras were pre-production and the use of memory cards to record the images was prohibited. We wanted to see if I could see immediate problems on the rear tilting lcd but none were glaring.  The only noticeable issue was color shift with the Contax G 28mm Biogon.  We're hoping that this can be remedied with

Leica 35mm Summicron Autofocus on the NEX-6

Leitz Wetzlar 35mm f/2 Summicron on a Sony NEX-6 Leica M 35mm Summicron Lens Autofocus via Contax G Adapter MxCamera posted their video of a Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron lens from 1960 on the Sony NEX-6 from 2012. The 52 year gap is bridged by a Contax G 28mm lens housing which has been modified to allow autofocus on NEX cameras. If only Dr. Mandler can see what his Summicron can do now. Thanks MXcamera HK!

Sony DSC-RX1 vs Leica M Type 240 via CameraStoreTV

Sony DSC-RX1 vs Leica M Type 240 TheCameraStoreTV posted their review of the Leica M Type 240. They also brought along the Leica M9 and the Sony DSC- RX1 to compare. The Leicas were fitted with the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux , while the RX1 comes with the Zeiss 35mm f/2 Sonnar. The RX1 image had a slight advantage over the M Type 240 in both low and high ISO shooting. Check out the full review by the Camera Store below. Leica M Type 240 Reviw by The Cameras Store

DxOMark Sony NEX-7 vs Leica M 240

Image
Leica M Type 240 vs Sony NEX-7 Sensor from DxOMark DxOMark published their analysis of the new Leica M Type 240's sensor and we compared it against the Sony compact heavyweights, the NEX-7 and the Sony DSC-RX1 . The NEX-7 is about the same as the new Leica M in the color depth and the dynamic range scores. It just fell short in the low-light ISO score which we can attribute to having an APS-C sensor compared to the Leica M 240's full frame sensor. We are hoping that the upcoming Sony NEX-7N will have ISO 50 to improve that score. Leica M Type 240 vs Sony DSC-RX1 Sensor from DxOMark But the full frame sensor of the RX1 is somewhat ahead of the new Leica M Type 240 according to DxOMark's measurements. Check out DxOMark's review of the Leica M Type 240 . Thanks DxOMark!

Sony NEX-7 with Leica 60mm Macro Elmarit-R

Image
Here are a few shots from Old Sturbridge Village using our newly acquired Leica 60mm f/2.8 Macro Elmarit-R on the Sony NEX-7. The Leica 60mm Macro is said to have "excellent image quality at close-up range..." and "superb results at greater distances" when stopped down. We used the Macro Elmarit-R wide open all day at f/2.8 and only stopped down to f/5.6 when the depth of field was needed. The NEX-7 was set to Aperture Priority and ISO 100 outdoors or Auto ISO indoors. A basic Leica R to E-mount lens adapter was used. NEX-7 with Leica 60mm at f/2.8 ISO 100 The NEX-7 with the Leica 60mm is a nice match in good light. We had no problem of keeping the shutter speeds up at f/2.8 in snowy New England. NEX-7 with Leica 60mm at f/2.8 ISO 800 to 1600 The Leica 60mm Macro Elmarit-R has a long focus throw and focusing indoors takes some practice with moving subjects. The focus ring is well damped and provided nice feedback for critical focus.
